There is some fun on the way – or is it up the beanstalk – when the cast of Jack and the Tangled Beanstalkis on stage this week.
This time Xander Steyn will make an appearance – in full drag make-up, high heels and all.
This talented writer and producer created another theatrical comedy with local actors.
Steyn says that he is probably the only person crazy enough to attempt two productions per year with day-job-civilians who do not even have to do an audition to be part of his theatre school.
“Everyone gets a role! No matter how small. I always tell my students: Don’t count your lines, but make your lines count!”
Jack and the Tangled Beanstalk is a mash-up of the old folk tales Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel, which Disney used as storyline in the film Tangled, andeven the Avengers make an appearance.
Steyn says audiences can expect big characters, big costumes and big group numbers.
“In the story we meet Gothel and her older sister, Gretel,” he explains.
“They tell the story of how their mother gave them each a precious gift on her death bed.
“Gretel (the eldest) received beans that didn’t do anything and Gothel received seeds that bloomed into a magical flower with healing powers that kept her young forever. Until the pregnant queen became sick and the kingdom found Gothel’s flower and used it to heal the sick queen.
“Rapunzel was born, who now had the power of the magic flower within her blonde bush of hair.
“Gothel then kidnapped the girl and raised her as her own in a tower with no stairs to keep her safe – and away from the kingdom who desperately searched to find her.
“Meanwhile, Jack lived in the countryside with his adopted mother, Mô Jacky. She sends him to town to sell his dear friend and cow, Cremora.
“This is where he meets Gretel, who tricks him into trading the cow for her magic (useless) beans.
“The rest you’ll have to see when you watch the show,” invites Steyn.
The main shows wil take place at The Rabbit Studio in Jock Meiring Street on Thursday (24/11) at 19:00, on Friday at 19:00 and on Saturday 16:00 and 19:00.
