Water supply probed

Bloem Water has announced that the poor water supply in the Mangaung Metro Municipality is due to the higher inflows of the Welbedacht Dam.

Strong rains have increased the flow of the Caledon River catchment.

“This has caused raw water intake blockages at the dam, as well as extensive damage to pumping equipment. A high debris and sediment load further reduced the inflow into the water treatment works,” Bloem Water stated.

“The supply of treated water is negatively affected while repairs to normalise the situation are underway.”

According to the entity, this situation caused a restriction in the supply and affected the Brandkop reservoir level which is fed by the Welbedacht Dam treatment plant.

“The entity is working around the clock to handle the challenge at the plant,” Bloem Water said.

“Water users in the Mangaung Metro Municipality can be assured that the water quality will not be compromised.”

Some areas will, however, be affected by the limited supply from the dam.

Water tankers will be deployed to affected areas until the situation improves.

According to the entity, it is working with the Mangaung Metro in finding solutions to ensure sufficient water supply to consumers.
