The Department of Water and Sanitation has a project in the pipeline to help augment drinking water supply and sanitation in the Mangaung Metro Municipality and surrounding areas.
Senzo Mchunu, minister of Water and Sanitation, revealed this step aimed at accommodating the growing population during his budget speech on 13 May.
Estimated to cost R10 billion, this will entail building a major pipeline from the Xhariep Dam. Mchunu anticipated that the project would be completed by 2028.
A similar project is underway in the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality. According to Mchunu, the implementation of this specific project would cost R1,7 billion and entail the upgrading of wastewater treatment infrastructure, water treatment and water distribution networks.
“Progress is 30% and the project is due to be completed by July in 2025,” said Mchunu.
