Free State-based visual artists are encouraged to enter the 2022 New Breed Art Competition.
Entries will be accepted from 12 to 18 September and the competition is open to new and emerging artists from the province, aged 18 years or older.
Category winners will be announced in November after public voting and an exhibition of shortlisted top artworks in October.
This year’s competition is the sixth presented by Phatshoane Henney Attorneys, in association with the Oliewenhuis Art Museum, the Art Bank of South Africa (ArtbankSA) and the Free State Art Collective.
Since its inception in 2016, the competition has supported the uncovering of talented visual artists, providing art development and mentorship opportunities for up-and-coming local artists and offering them national exposure to showcase their work.
The overall winner takes home R50 000, and the runner-up R20 000.
The winner of the public choice award and two merit award recipients will each get R10 000.
Artists whose works are selected for the exhibition, shown at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum, automatically qualify for consideration and possible inclusion in the Free State Art Collective, founded and headed up by Karen Brusch.
They also have a opportunity to gain exposure with ArtbankSA, a national programme of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, tasked with purchasing art from emerging South African artists.
