The Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court is today Z Wednesday, 3 July Z set to decide on the granting of bail, or not, for murder suspect Songezo Steven Sejakane (42); with women’s rights advocacy groups expected to oppose.
Sejakane is applying for bail regarding the murder of Judith Mpho Moalasi (41) on the night of 16 June.
Fed-up with the terror against women, various groups against gender-based violence (GBV) protested outside the court on Wednesday, 26 June, during Sejakane’s appearance. He appeared in the same court wherein another murder suspect, McDonald Masithela, appeared.
Allegedly, Masithela stabbed Bongiwe Phulampa to death with a knife.
Sejakane is reappearing in court regarding Moalasi’s killing, with a separate rape matter involving a woman still lingering over his head.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed this pending case of alleged rape against him. He was released on bail in November last year, while the police investigation into this matter is ongoing. Sejakane’s appearance regarding the alleged rape is yet to be confirmed.
He is facing a charge of murder pertaining to Moalasi’s gruesome killing. Sejakane reportedly ran over Moalasi’s body multiple times at the crime scene near the G4S Mangaung Prison. The victim, who was a teacher and worked at the Tsoseletso Secondary School in Bloemfontein, was laid to rest on Sunday, 30 June.
Sejakane reportedly had an affair with the victim.
Moalasi’s cold-blooded murder has sparked public outrage, denouncing the violent nature in which she was murdered. Free State premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae led a march against GBV from Hoffman Square on Wednesday to court, and also attended the proceedings of the two murder cases. She was accompanied by MECs Jabu Mbalula and Dibolelo Mance.
The march, dubbed the “March for Justice”, aimed to raise public awareness about the scourge of GBV that is still present and show support for the victims’ families.
