Validity of data hinges on participation

Households not yet counted in Census 2022 have only until 30 April to complete the census questionnaire online.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) is calling on all households to ensure that they are counted online or by a fieldworker.

“It is critical that every household participates in the census,” said Calvin Molongoana, Stats SA project director.

“The country’s socio-economic dynamics have changed a lot since the last census, which was conducted in 2011. Government and businesses need accurate information in order to plan, and the census is the only source of population and housing data at a local level. The more people participate, the more accurate the data.”

Those who have not yet been counted can visit the website getcounted.statssa.gov.za and fill in their name, surname and cellphone number.

Upon entering their details, they will receive a one-time password (OTP) which will give them access to the census questionnaire.

An average household of four should be able to complete the questionnaire within 30 minutes.

Once the questionnaire is completed, households will get a reference number.

This must be kept in a safe place for when they are visited by a census fieldworker, or during the post-enumeration survey, which is a quality check for the census project.

Stats SA appeals to all who live within the country’s borders – irrespective of their status – to ensure that they are counted.

The Statistics Act and the Protection of Personal Information Act complement each other in ensuring that all data collected by Stats SA remains confidential.

Data on an individual cannot be shared with any other agency. Any data released by Stats SA is aggregated and confidential to ensure anonymity.

Extreme weather conditions led to data collection challenges, particularly in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. As a result, Stats SA extended the census mop-up period to the end of April.

Uncounted households in all provinces are encouraged to take advantage of the extended period to ensure that they are counted.
