The Ikaelelo Secondary School Alumni Association continues to take steps in fostering a positive school culture and emphasising the value of education. Another project in the alumni’s long-term action programme to benefit this Bloemfontein school and its learners has been completed.

The cleaning and maintenance undertaken during the first school holiday of 2023, which ended this week, followed the donation of school uniforms to learners in February. A group of 100 learners from less fortunate households each received a full set of uniform to address their plight.

In addition to the alumni, the participants in the cleaning project included a group of Ikaelelo learners, as well as members of the school’s management.

They got their hands dirty, turning the school premises in Rocklands into a conducive learning and teaching environment. Long grass and trees growing unchecked are now a thing of the past.

Items of recyclable materials such as plastic, paper and various types of bottles were also collected.

Andrew Seatlholo, deputy chairperson of the alumni association, said the action programme was being rolled out in phases.

“Our priority was these two projects: the learners’ uniform and the cleaning and maintenance project – as informed by critical needs and demand,” said Seatlholo.

“Through the cleaning and maintenance project, we strive to instil a lesson that people have a moral duty to keep themselves and their environment clean, and that learning and teaching must happen in an environment conducive to providing and receiving education.

“By involving the alumni, members of the school management, and the learners as well, the principle is upheld that charity begins at home – with us first.”

On Wednesday (12/04), teachers and learners returned to school to find tidy classrooms and an attractive schoolyard.
