The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, has received an overwhelming number of applications for the 2023 academic year.

Applications received exceed the institution’s enrolment capacity of 21 000 students at both Bloemfontein and Welkom campuses, explained Dan Maritz, CUT spokesperson.

“The CUT received 211 186 applications from prospective students for 2023. The first-time entering target is 4 515. The total number of first-year admissions is 6 283. That is 4 881 at the Bloemfontein campus and 1 402 at the Welkom campus,” said Maritz.

The points system is a determining factor in selecting students who qualify for enrolment at the institution. The minimum points required to study at the CUT are 27, while some programmes need more than the minimum.

Maritz said based on applications received, huge interest has been shown in obtaining education qualifications. The numbers are as follows:

  • Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching – 21 179 applications;
  • Bachelor of Education (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) Language Education – 16 912 applications; and
  • Bachelor of Education (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) Computer Science – 15 799 applications.

The enrolment of students officially starts today (25/01) after a delay due to the results of the National Senior Certificate examination being announced later than usual.
