Marking its 15 year celebration, the Kopano Social Club in Bloemfontein will stage a charity football tournament in aid of needy learners.
The event’s chief objective is to collect school shoes and sanitary towels to be presented to needy learners attending the Grassland Primary School.
The knockout tournament will be played over two days, on 5 and 6 February, at the Clive Solomon Stadium in Heidedal.
“Having shoes remains one of the important elements to enable and encourage these learners to continue the journey of education and realise the dream of improving their circumstances,” said Percy Hlwayi, secretary of the club, which consists of 17 members.
“We are calling on the public to support the initiative by donating any of the items intended to benefit these needy learners.”
Hlwayi said the participating football clubs have led by example, having already donated items.
He said beneficiaries had been identified based on the complex challenges they faced, and that the Kopano Social Club hoped to alleviate their plight.
“Each team was requested to donate five pairs of shoes as admission to the charity tournament,” said Hlwayi.
In total, 16 teams registered with the Bloemfontein Masters and Legends League have entered the tournament, which will culminate in the presenting of silverware to the clubs finishing in the top three places.
The tokens of acknowledgement that will be awarded include a gold medal plus a floating trophy to the overall winner, as well as silver and bronze medals to the clubs finishing in the next two positions.
