Free State track and cross country athlete Kesa Molotsane will look to deliver an improved performance to finish on top at this year’s World Athletics Cross Country Championships.
This will be her third appearance, and she is hoping it will be third time lucky in her bid to conquer the global event. The championship meet is scheduled to be held in Bathurst, Australia, on 18 February.
Molotsane is part of a strong squad that Athletics South Africa (ASA) chose to represent the country. She will be competing in the senior women’s category.
In 2017, Molotsane competed at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda, and finished in 35th place.
In 2019, she represented South Africa at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, where she became the first South African to finish.
Molotsane earned her slot in the national squad following her impressive performance at the ASA’s cross country trials in December last year. The runner secured a third spot in the women’s 10 km race, which was a qualifier event for the national squad.
Molotsane will rely on her experience gained in previous competitions.
Other Free State athletes selected for the squad are the juniors Johani van Tonder (triple jump), Aron Alvarez Aranda (discus) and Natasha Gertenbach (100 m hurdles).
