Three non-professional women’s football teams in the Free State are buoyant after achieving promotion to the second-tier Sasol Women’s League.

Clubs guaranteed participation in the upper division are UGU FC from Virginia, Inter Madrid FC from Bloemfontein and Clever Girls FC from Qwaqwa.

The clubs’ promotion came after these teams won their matches at the provincial promotion play-offs held at the Bronville Stadium in Welkom on Saturday (29/01).

These clubs campaigned and were victorious in the lower ranked Promotion Women’s League, which is also played under the auspices of Safa.

This league operates at regional level. Madrid and Napoli represented the Mangaung Metro and UGU represented Lejweleputswa, while Clever Girls represented the Thabo Mofutsanyana region.

UGU claimed first position, receiving a gold medal and a floating trophy, Madrid got a silver medal and Clever Girls received a bronze medal.

UGU had beat Madrid by 6 – 2 and Clever Girls by 1 – 0. Madrid’s only win was over Clever Girls, by 1 – 0.

Fourth-placed Napoli FC from Botshabelo, the one other Free State team with a shot at moving to a higher tiered league, will only be promoted if Ixias FC from Welkom gets promoted to the Safa National Women’s League.

The national promotion play-offs for this league will take place in Durban this month, and will culminate in the promotion of only two teams: the overall winner and the runner-up.
