The Bloemfontein taxi driver who allegedly assaulted a female traffic officer is expected to reappear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (09/02).
The 32-year-old man faces charges of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm; obstruction of an officer while executing her duties; and damaging state property.
The incident, which took place in Dr Belcher Road on 31 January, went viral on social media.
The Mangaung Metro officer, operating from a marked vehicle, was apparently attacked upon requesting that the man produce his driving licence and operating permit. She had stopped the taxi as part of her daily routine duties.
Upon this request, the taxi driver became enraged and acted aggressively towards the officer.
A stranger who witnessed the incident intervened to defuse the situation.
