Young aspirant chefs and bakers in the Free State are encouraged to enter one of two competitions offering prizes amounting to R110 000.

The competitions target culinary students from the age of 18 to 27 to compete in teams of two for a first prize of R30 000, a second prize of R20 000 and a third prize of R15 000.

Both the RCL Foods Young Chefs Challenge and the RCL Foods Young Bakers Challenge offer talent in South Africa the opportunity to seize their chance in the industry and is aimed at enabling them to start careers.

The competitions are presented through partnership between the South African Chefs Association and the South African Bakers Association. Building on the success of last year, the partners have launched the challenge for bakers.

“Providing an opportunity to compete fulfils a significant need in the industry, and the culinary community has been eagerly anticipating the return of the competition in 2022,” said chef Brad Kavanagh, head chef of RCL Foods.

“By providing a platform for young chefs and bakers to showcase their talent, we are creating a positive, sustainable impact.”

The two participants in each team must be enrolled at the same professional institution or in-service programme focusing on Culinary Arts or Professional Cookery.

The competition for bakers is open to individuals who bake breads or baked confectionery as a source of income, or who are enrolled with a professional institution or an in-service programme focusing on these fields of study.

Regional competitions will take place in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, Limpopo and the Free State.

Potential participants must fill in the registration form and submit a portfolio of evidence relevant to the competition category before 31 July. Six teams in each competition will be selected by the South African Chefs Association to compete in the regional competitions on the basis of these entries.
