The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, has called on students to utilise its wellness centre, which renders comprehensive services to improve physical and mental health.

This follows the university management expressing its shock about the death of Carla Steytler (24).

She reportedly died on 22 February after collapsing at the Bloemfontein campus.

Steytler, a second-year Radiography student, was reportedly an active member of the varsity community and a dedicated class representative in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences. She hailed from De Aar in the Northern Cape.

“Carla demonstrated the ideal of a CUT student’s attributes and was actively involved in the affairs of the department by virtue of being one of the most dedicated class representatives,” said Prof. Alfred Ngowi, CUT acting vice-chancellor.

He said the institution had sent its condolences to the deceased’s family.

“The university has been in close contact with the family to offer support during this difficult time. The university is providing trauma counselling to staff and students needing immediate support.”

Students who need support and trauma counselling are advised to utilise the following platforms:

  • dial the toll-free number 0800-004-770 from a Telkom landline;
  • send an email to ewp@lifehealthcare.co.za or wellness@cut.ac.za;
