Potent goal-getter Nthabiseng Majiya has shown that she is indeed hungry to score.
She stepped up to the challenge when she netted her first goal for Banyana Banyana in the 1 – 0 victory achieved by South Africa’s senior national women’s team over Botswana on Sunday (10/07). The teams met in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, underway in Morocco.
Majiya’s all-important goal pitted her team against Tunisia in the quarter-final that is scheduled to be played on Thursday (14/07) at 22:00.
The Richmond United women’s goal poacher scored on her second appearance, having debuted in a fixture South Africa won by 3 – 1 against Burundi.
Majiya (18), from Philippolis, has already showed she has an appetite for scoring. While she came close to grabbing one goal in the match against Burundi, her persistence saw her scoring a memorable goal against Botswana, who eliminated South Africa in the 2020 Olympic Games qualifier fixture in 2019.
She came on in the second stanza in both fixtures, replacing vastly experienced teammates, and lived up to her reputation. She substituted Jermaine Seoposenwe (28) in the match against Burundi and international forward Thembi Kgatlana (26) against Botswana.
Majiya’s scoring form is cementing the reputation she earned in the domestic Hollywoodbets Super League, South Africa’s premier women’s football league. She was the second top goal scorer, with 20 goals in her maiden season.
This rich vein of form proves she is a worthy recipient of the coveted accolade of young player of the season for 2021, presented by Safa.
Majiya has represented South Africa in international games as a member of the U20 team since 2020.
