Heightened security measures will be in place at this year’s edition of Bloem Show, which starts today (27/04) in Bloemfontein.

Safety and security are among the aspects prioritised by organisers to ensure the event’s success.

Elmarie Prinsloo, chief executive officer, has emphasised the fact that sufficient measures will guard against criminal activities at the ten-day event.

“Safety on the showground is a priority,” she said.

“Police officials, security measures, first aid assistance, disaster management and traffic personnel will be present at the show. A full-time police station has been established on the showground.”

Approximately 166 security guards, 70 gate staff and 40 car guards will be on duty.

Health and safety measures against the spread of Covid-19 are also in place.

Visitors, exhibitors and participants of competitions will be required to provide proof of vaccination. Alternatively, they can gain entry with a negative Covid-19 test not older than 72 hours.

According to Prinsloo, a pharmacy group will be conducting Covid-19 testing at a subsidised cost of R95 at the venue.

The Bloem Show is the largest consumer event in central South Africa. It marks its return after a two-year absence owing to disruption caused by the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020.

Despite budget constraints due to the pandemic and the increase in fuel prices, innovation has seen the show transcend South African borders.

“We have a few new agricultural partners and it is great to have our partners of the past sticking to Bloem Show,” said Prinsloo.

“We will also take Bloem Show beyond the borders of Bloemfontein with a daily programme summary on AgriTV between 18:00 and 19:00. There will also be a two-hour programme on DSTV’s channel 180.”

A charity carnival will be held tomorrow for 251 underprivileged children and 33 caretakers of Engo’s children’s homes.
