In South Africa, about 4 300 people are waiting for organ donations. Typically, they require livers, kidneys, lungs or hearts.
According to the Organ Donor Foundation of South Africa, the average waiting period is three to five years.
The foundation stated that scare supply is not a South African phenomenon as it applies to nations worldwide who are unable to meet the demand for organ donors.
The public is urged to register as donors. Anyone under the age of 18 must have parental or guardian permission. A medical evaluation will determine which organs can be donated. Certain circumstances, like HIV, active cancer spread, or severe infection, would prohibit donation.
