Runners from far and wide ready for the ultimate human race

Multitudes of runners across the world are gearing up for this year’s Comrades Marathon taking place on Sunday, 28 August.


Multitudes of runners across the world are gearing up for this year’s Comrades Marathon taking place on Sunday, 28 August.

This will be the 95th staging of the race which first took place in 1921, with only 34 entrants.

This year’s edition is a down run course, starting at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finishing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

This is the first event post the Covid-19 pandemic.The race appropriate campaign slogan is “The Return – Sishay’ Ibuya”.

This coincides with its comeback to the sporting calendar.

Dubbed the Ultimate Human Race, it is famous for attracting runners from across the world.

Bruce Fordyce (62) stands out as most well-known runner in South Africa, having won this marathon eight years in a row and nine times overall.

Samuel Tshabalala became the first black athlete to win it, on the thereafter historic day of 31 May 1989.
