The Northern Cape province is to roll out the red carpet for rising Banyana Banyana star Nthabiseng Majiya (18), who is part of South Africa’s senior women’s team that won the Women’s African Cup of Nations (Wafcon).
Banyana made history by winning their first-ever Women’s Afcon trophy when they beat the host, Morocco, by 2 – 1 in the final played on Saturday (23/07).
Majiya is set to land at the Kimberley Airport on Thursday (28/07) and will be welcomed by Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul.
Originally from the small town of Philippolis in the Free State, Majiya currently plays for Richmond United FC, which is based in De Aar. Her contribution to Banyana Banyana’s continental achievement came in scoring the all-important goal against Botswana in the group stages. Majiya’s single goal pitted South Africa against Tunisia in the quarter final. The reigning champions, led by former captain Desiree Ellis, beat Tunisia by the same margin.
Richmond coach Edwin Lisene is delighted about Majiya’s contribution.
“This is worth celebrating, considering the background of the player, current team and the country. It is a great motivation to her teammates and other girls aspiring to play football,” said Lisene.
Majiya debuted in a fixture South Africa won by 3 – 1 against Burundi. She received the young player of the season accolade from Safa, recognising her stunning performance in the 2021 season. The prolific striker finished as the second top goal-scorer, with 20 goals in her maiden season of the Hollywoodbets Super League, South Africa’s premier women’s football league. She was one of three contenders for the Golden Boot award too.
She is part of South Africa’s national junior women’s team, Basetsana, and has represented the country as a junior since 2020.
