The Free State police are investigating the fatal shooting of Centlec employee David Khanda (50) at his house in Cuban Street, Pine Haven, Bloemfontein.
He was shot at about 21:30 on 2 September, briefly after parking his car.
The unknown armed assailants fled the scene thereafter. His family members who went outside to investigate upon hearing gunshots, reportedly found the deceased lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. The motivation for his brutal killing is unknown.
According to Lele Mamatu, spokesperson for Centlec, Khanda was one of the employees in the intervention unit, reporting to the chief executive officer, Malefane Sekoboto. The intervention unit is tasked with the monitoring and evaluation of service delivery.
Mamatu said the slain official was one of the longest serving employees of the entity. He has described Khanda’s murder at his house as a barbaric killing.
“We trust that the law enforcement of this country will undertake a successful investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators, and that anyone found to have committed this heinous crime is put behind bars,” said Mamatu.
Khanda’s murder adds to the list of incidents seemingly related to Centlec’s internal squabbles, which have seen selective officials resorting to legal action to resolve their impasse.
