The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, and electricity distributor Centlec have signed a memorandum of understanding.

The document, signed on 14 November, states the parties will share their expertise and work closely together to reach a shared goal of empowering employees.

The varsity will make its faculties available for the purposes of improving employees’ skills and offering classes for the attainment of qualifications.

Prof. Alfred Ngowi, acting vice-chancellor and principal of the CUT, stated that this agreement was testimony to the university’s commitment to creating networks and advancing the development of the Mangaung community through advancing skills.

“We will conduct experiential training and applied research for Centlec employees using our state-of-the-art machinery, and vice versa,” said Ngowi.

“The university also pledges its commitment and support for the activities of both participants in this agreement.”

According to Malefane Sekoboto, chief executive officer (CEO) of Centlec who is also a CUT alumnus, the positive impact of the institution on educating the community is far-reaching.

He said that roughly between 60% and 70% of the entity’s technical personnel, especially the technicians, had studied and graduated at the CUT.

“So, you can see the impact that the CUT has already had in educating our technical staff. We are expecting to take this relationship, which has always been there, to a higher level through exploring how best we can utilise the resources that we have to make sure that our communities reap the benefits,” said Sekoboto.
