South African football match official Abongile Tom will add another feather to his cap when officiating at this year’s Fifa men’s U20 World Cup in Indonesia.

He is the only South African selected to officiate at the international competition, held in May.

Tom’s selection is due to outstanding performance at the African Nations Championship (Chan) and the domestic Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Abdul Ebrahim, Safa head of referees, has expressed joy and has also praised Tom.

“We are extremely proud of Abongile, and his progress shows that we are developing world-class match officials,” said Ebrahim.

“We are happy that we have another match official at the highest level so soon after Victor Gomez retired. We have set a benchmark as a department to ensure that we are represented at all major tournaments for both men and women.”
