The Mangaung Metro Municipality has avoided another impasse with workers that threatened to derail the national government’s rescue plan.
Disgruntled workers not only downed tools, but also started disposing of refuse at the municipality’s administrative headquarters in Bloemfontein.
Waste was burned to ashes around the Bram Fischer Building on Tuesday (26/04).
Workers claimed that as little as R27 had been paid into their accounts.
In an effort to avoid a prolonged protest, the municipality paid workers’ outstanding salaries on Friday (29/04).
The strike came just days after another brawl involving senior political officials at the municipal headquarters.
A recording of the brawl shows Mzigusi Nkungwana, Mangaung’s acting city manager, being forced to leave the office.
According to Qondile Khedama, municipal spokesperson, Nkungwana’s contract came to an end on 31 March, and he was requested to vacate the premises.
The municipal offices have become the setting for various attacks in the wake of growing administrative troubles.
On 7 February, an employee was reportedly attacked and left bleeding following an invasion by an unruly group of people.
In December last year, another group wearing ANC-branded T-shirts marauded the offices.
This incident culminated in the attack and alleged stabbing of Patrick Monyakoane, former member of the mayoral committee.
