The Free State Department of Health is awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death of one of the survivors of the horrific crash involving a bus and truck on the N8 road last Thursday, 10 November.
The person, identified to be a woman, died at the Moroka Hospital in Thaba Nch, yesterday.
According to Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson of the department, there is no conclusive evidence that suggests the person’s death was directly due to the accident that involved a truck and a bus belonging to Interstate Bus Line. He said the person was admitted to the Botshabelo District Hospital after the accident on 10 November. Thereafter, the person was discharged from the hospital to go back home in Thaba Nchu.
“The department would like to caution that the cause of death is not to be rushed into and easily attributed to the accident. It is not a simple logic to add this patient into the number of persons that died in the accident up until the results of a post-mortem are received to ascertain the cause of death,” said Mvambi.
According to him, the patient went to the Moroka Hospital on Sunday. “She had comorbidities that were known both to herself and the health professionals that treated her. The body was taken for post-mortem yesterday to either rule out or confirm trauma related death,” said Mvambi.
The death toll of the accident remains at eight, six of which have been confirmed to be women. Among the deceased are the drivers of the bus and truck, the latter of which was identified as an employee of Sedaka Logistics.
