The Bloemfontein police have yet to make a breakthrough in the murder of a male student Siyawandisa Ruda (23), who was enrolled at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State.
He was shot dead by unknown armed assailants during a robbery at about 22:30 on Saturday (19/11) in the Universitas suburb.
He was reportedly ambushed on the corner of John Knox and Calvyn Street while in the company of a 20-year-old female companion. The attackers robbed her of a Hewlett Packard laptop and a toiletries bag.
Lt. Col Thabo Covane, spokesperson for the Mangaung police, said information received states the killers fled the scene in a white, old model Mercedes-Benz sedan. They reportedly took off in the direction of Paul Kruger Street.
When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, the victim was still alive. Covane said the victim was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
“A 9mm cartridge case was found and collected as evidence from the scene,” said Covane.
A case of murder and armed robbery was opened at the Parkweg Police Station.
