The University of the Free State (UFS) hopes newly appointed sport director Jerry Laka will unlock vast potential.

He took office on 1 November, replacing DB Prinsloo, who now heads athletics after his term ended in March.

Laka held the same position at Stellenbosch University (Maties) in the Western Cape. His goal is to grow KovsieSport by providing a transformative student sport experience.

“Sport is constantly changing, and challenges will always drive one to be innovative in this ever-evolving space,” he believes.

Laka’s career highlights include serving as the general secretary of the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (Cucsa) and being a member of the University Sports South Africa (Ussa) national executive committee. He was assistant coach of Banyana Banyana at the London 2012 Olympics. The team won a silver medal at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Championship in the same year.
