Despite more than 434 claims, worth approximately R5 million in damages, by Bloemfontein motorists against the Mangaung Metro Municipality – relating to failure to fill dangerous potholes and maintain the roads – a lack of prompt action from the municipality remains a grave concern. This pothole on the N8, which has dramatically expanded after an underground pipe conveying drinkable water burst weeks ago, attests to this shortcoming. Some claims were settled towards motorists between July 2019 and June 2022. The municipality has reportedly committed to paying in 296 cases still pending. Photo: Teboho Setena
