The football fraternity and the public will be able to pay tribute and their last respects to Premier Soccer League assistant referee Moeketsi Molelekoa in his home town of Botshabelo. The youthful match official was killed in a car accident last Friday, 20 January.
The South African Football Association (Safa) in the Mangaung Metro stated that the logistics for the memorial and funeral services were finalised with the family. Lehlohonolo Maduna, general secretary of the federation in the Mangaung Metro, said the two venues were chosen in anticipation of a big crowd of mourners to pay their last tribute to Molelekoa.
The memorial service will be held on Thursday, 2 February, at the Lenyora La Thuto Secondary School in Section H, starting at 13:00, with the funeral service on Sunday, 5 February, at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium arena.
Molelekoa died tragically when the car he was driving collided head-on with a bus owned by Interstate Bus Lines. Details surrounding the fatal crash are unclear.
Messages of condolences from the football fraternity continue pouring in since last Friday, 20 January. Fifa has also sent condolences to the family and friends of Molelekoa after hearing the devasting news.
“On behalf of the Fifa referees committee and the worldwide family of football, I wish to extend our condolences to you, to the South African Football Association community and, most importantly, to Mr Moeketsi Molelekoa’s family, friends and loved ones.
“Please let them know that the football community stands by their side. We would hope that in some way, our words of support may help bring a little bit of peace and solace in this time of sadness,” said Pierluigi Collina, Fifa referees committee chairman.
