A vending machine that dispenses sanitary products has improved the attendance of female learners of the Lereko Secondary School in Bloemfontein.
This automated machine, courtesy of Windmill Casino and Sun International, was handed over to the school on 13 May. It is part of the Adopt a School Project, the hotel group’s community social investment initiative.
“No girl should be missing school due to a lack of access to proper sanitary products,” said Johan Oosthuizen, general manager of the casino.
“We hope the machine will help these young women focus on their studies and stop worrying about where they will find sanitary products.”
According to Francina Kibinye, acting principal, the machine has had an immediate effect on the attendance rate of the 600 female learners.
“The school and governing body are grateful for the donation,” she said.
Since embarking on its educational programme to integrate sustainable practices at schools in 2019, the group has adopted 38 schools across the country.
This initiative has seen R15 million invested to incorporate various social, health and safety, economic and environmental improvements.
