Bloemfontein-based boxing promoter Lebohang Mahoko has earned his stripes, being elected to serve in the executive structure of the national professional promoters association of Boxing South Africa (BSA).

The director of the Dream Team Gym has been elected as the deputy chairperson, next to Ayanda Matiti.

The structure was elected on 3 October at a conference held in Durban, as part of a concerted effort to raise the profile of professional boxing.

Mahoko received recognition for persevering in promoting the sport by hosting national and international championships – affording a new breed of fighters opportunity to showcase their talent and launch professional careers.

“I’m the only Free State representative elected to serve in the structure,” he confirmed.

His election is considered to be well-deserved.

“I did not campaign to be elected on the structure. I joined other promoters after the Macufe boxing tournament, which I had organised.”

Mahoko’s election comes as he marks a decade serving as a promoter in boxing. In 2017, he was rewarded by the BSA with the promoter of the year accolade.

Other individuals elected to serve in the body’s executive structure are Zandile Malinga (secretary) and Phato Dongola (deputy secretary).

Office bearers will serve a term of three years and will, amongst other duties, work to deliver boxing tournaments across South Africa; attain uniform standards in the delivery of boxing tournaments; and also influence and lobby stakeholders such as the private-public sector and broadcasters to improve the country’s boxing standards.
