The male learner arrested in connection with the alleged murder of female teacher Matefo Mphosela (35), who taught at the Kagisano Combined School in Soutpan, will be allowed to write his final examination.
The Free State Department of Education confirmed the decision, allowing the 20-year-old suspect to write his Gr. 12 final exam.
Howard Ndaba, spokesperson of the department, said the department’s decision is in accordance with the rule of law in South Africa stating that all persons charged with an offence shall be presumed innocent until proven guilty. The suspect will be among the 27 learners at the Kagisano Combined School, expected to begin writing their final exams on 31 October.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Brandfort Magistrate’s Court today, 24 October, following his arrest on Thursday, 20 October, after allegedly stabbing Mphosela with a knife.
According to the department’s verified information, the slain teacher taught physical science to Gr. 10 to Gr. 12 learners, as well as natural science to Gr. 9 and Gr. 10 learners at the school in question.
Mphosele’s death has sent shockwaves throughout Soutpan’s township of Ikgomotseng. According to the police, she succumbed to her injuries after allegedly being stabbed with a knife by the suspect at about 21:00.
The deceased Mphosela was reportedly attacked in her house in the Ikgomotseng township. The motive of the teacher’s murder is unknown at this stage. The assailant was arrested shortly after the incident.
