An inspection campaign by the Department of Labour in the Free State revealed several employers were in contravention of labour laws.

The blitz inspection was in May as part of the Workers’ Month drive aimed at adherence to labour legislation.

Cebisa Siyobi, spokesperson for the provincial department, said 346 notices were issued to employers for non-compliance of 652 businesses inspected. Out of these, 131 businesses were found to be in contravention of labour legislation. The inspection was conducted in the wholesale and retail, agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality, construction, road freight and logistics sectors.

Manelisi Luxande, provincial chief inspector, said findings have compelled the department to continue these inspections beyond May.
