Kovsies geared for watershed

The men’s football side of the University of the Free State (UFS) will be looking to consolidate its position on the Varsity Football table, at the expenses of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) side, when they meet in a fixture on Thursday (11/08).

The men’s football side of the University of the Free State (UFS) will be looking to consolidate its position on the Varsity Football table, at the expenses of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) side, when they meet in a fixture on Thursday (11/08).

The latter team plays host toof this intriguingclash of the first leg of the competition, in which eight universities partakerepresented.

Teams compete on a round robin basis to determine the semifinalists. The two winners thereof, progress to the final, to compete for the championship title.

Kovsies and UJ are on equal footingsimilar grounds, they havewith six in the bagpoints apiece, and are just a point adrift from current log leader, the side of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). A win will therefore propel either team to claim the top spot.

Such a prospect will be determined by the results in matches involving the North West University (NWU), in second place, and table-topper TUT, the only team undefeated after three competition matches played in the competition.

The NWU is scheduled to take on the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), while TUT will face Wits University.

Both Kovsies and UJ will also be looking to extend their winning streak after a 2 – 1 victory over the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), as well as over Wits by 2 – 0 last week.

The UFS is the only Free State institution in the competition after the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, failed to qualify for this year.

Kovsies will be depending on danger man Sello Diphoko to plot the opposition’s downfall. He was integral influential against the VUT, scoring a brace to secure his team valuable points.

Diphoko is three goals shyine from surpassing the record of goals scored last year. The rich vein of form he displayed last year saw him dulyawarded two prestigious accolades: the Golden Boot and FNB Varsity Football’s player of the tournament title. He was chosen ahead of teammate Thabo Lesibe and counterpart Nkosinathi Sibiya of UJ.

Diphoko can only hope to emulate last year’s superb performance in this competition, set to finish on 22 September with the final.

To attain target, Kovsies head coach, Tebogo Motsamai, is compelled to ensure his lads minimise errors against their equally determined opponents, UJ. His team’s is approaching this upcoming match with a targetin mind is to avenge the defeat of 1 – 4 at the hands of the defending champion, UJ, in last year’s final.

Diphoko can only hopeto emulate last year’s superb performance in this competition, set to finish on 22 Septemberwith the final.
