The men’s football team of the University of the Free State (UFS) will be looking to advance to its second successive final of the Varsity Football tournament.
Kovsies wil clash against the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in a semifinal fixture on Thursday (15/09).
The adrenaline-pumping match will take place at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. Kickoff is at 17:00.
The other semifinal, between the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the North-West University (NWU), will follow suit at 19:15 on the Soweto campus.
The Kovsie lads lost by 0 – 4 to UJ in the 2021 final of the tournament, which features eight universities. The team had reached the final for the first time after beating the University of Pretoria (UP) by 2 – 1.
Kovsies is the only team of the four in this year’s semifinals that is yet to lift the Varsity Football trophy. TUT won in 2016 and NWU in 2019. The defending champion, UJ, will be gunning to retain the title won last year.
Kovsies’ coach, Tebogo Motsamai, has another chance to rewrite history in this competition by leading his warriors to another final and ultimately winning the competition. His charges take on TUT looking to avenge the 0 – 1 defeat in last Thursday’s fixture in Bloemfontein.
