The men’s football team of the University of the Free State (UFS) will be looking to advance to their second successive final of the Varsity Football tournament. Kovsie faces the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in a must-win semi-final fixture taking place on Thursday (15/09).

The adrenaline-pumping clash will be at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. Kick-off is at 17:00. The other semi-final between University of Johannesburg (UJ) and North West University (NWU) will follow suit at 19:15 at the Soweto Campus.

The Kovsie lads lost 0 – 4 to UJ in the 2021 final of the tournament, which features eight universities. UFS reached the final for the first time after beating the University of Pretoria (UP) 2 – 1.

Kovsie is the only team yet to lift the prestigious Varsity Football trophy of the three in this year’s semi-final. TUT won the 2016 edition and NWU in 2019. The defending champions, UJ, will be gunning to successfully defend the title they won last year.

Kovsie’s coach, Tebogo Motsamai, has another chance to rewrite history in this competition by leading his warriors to another final and ultimately win the competition. His charges take on TUT, looking to avenge the 0 – 1 defeat in last Thursday’s fixture in Bloemfontein.

“TUT is the last hurdle we must cross to the next destination. We are going with a full-strength squad, unlike last Thursday when we fielded some inexperience players. We are not delving too much into what happened last week. The biggest thing is the fighting spirit going forward in our bid to win the tournament,” says Motsamai.
