An ongoing investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit into a fraudulent driving licence scam in Bloemfontein has resulted in the arrest of six alleged scammers, who face charges of fraud and corruption.

The elite crime-fighting unit launched an investigation earlier this year after reports from two victims.

The latest culprit is Thabang Johannes Mokotjwa (46). He appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday (05/09) with alleged accomplices Keneilwe Elisa Molehe (53), Kebautlwile Jacqueline Kgwadi (47), Matsobane Michael Mokhonwana (48), Lehlohonolo Athy Molosi (46) and Ishmael Selogiloe Kganare (42).

Capt. Christopher Singo, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the suspects would stand trial together.

The Hawks cracked down on the alleged scammers in March.

The suspects apparently conspired to scam two victims out of R8 500 each in 2021.

Singo said the victims had planned to obtain driving licences in Bloemfontein, adding that Mokhonwana appeared to be the common denominator. Other suspects allegedly told the two victims that they knew Mokhonwana, and then convinced them that he would be able to assist them in obtaining a licence for R8 500.

Singo said the victims paid the amount agreed upon when approached during March 2021.

“The victim met Mokhonwana, who then agreed to help him obtain his driving licence for R8 500. The victim then paid the amount,” confirmed Singo.

He said the suspects did not work at any traffic department.

“But when they lured the victims, they claimed to know certain traffic officials who could assist in obtaining driver’s licences.

Singo said the two victims became aware they had been scammed after not receiving any feedback after several follow-ups with the accused.

The suspects have been granted R500 bail each, with conditions.
