A Gr. 8 learner of the Moemedi Secondary School in Bloemfontein has lost the hearing in his left ear following alleged assault by two teachers at the school in question.
Mosa Gailele (14) has undergone surgery at the Busamed Bram Fischer Private Hospital.
It is believed blows suffered punctured his eardrum, resulting in the loss of hearing in his ear.
Josephine Gailele, the boy’s mother, said her son was receiving medical treatment and that the incident had traumatised him.
“Surgery on Mosa has cost me more than R30 000. I must still pay for aftercare,” said Gailele.
Mosa underwent an operation in October. The assault allegedly occurred mid-September.
The aggrieved mother is now speaking out publicly after not getting satisfactory answers from the school.
“I tried to have this matter resolved,” she says.
“I went to the school to enquire and engage the two teachers, but they were evasive. After escalating the matter to the principal, I still did not get satisfactory answers.”
She says the principal however promised to escalate the matter to the provincial Department of Education after she had made him aware that her son had undergone surgery.
Information gathered from her own investigation about the incident that is said to have led to the alleged assault revealed that two teachers had summoned Mosa and another two boys to the staff room. The teachers then allegedly locked the boys in the room and beat them.
Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the provincial Department of Education, said the department’s legal team was investigating the matter. The investigation is ongoing.
Lt Col. Thabo Covane, police spokesperson for the Mangaung Metro, confirmed that a case of assault had been opened at the Kagisanong Police Station for investigation.
“No arrests have been made yet,” he said.
