The reading for enjoyment campaign Nal’ibali is giving readers the chance to win books.

The Nal’ibali reading for enjoyment programme is offering readers a chance to win exciting books to honour Nelson Mandela’s wish.

“Be a lifelong student, read as many books possible.”

Gogo, Nal’ibali’s reading granny, says: “
One of Nelson Mandela’s biggest wishes for the children of South Africa was for them to experience the joy of reading.

To honour that wish, Nal’ibali is back with some tips on how people can foster an appreciation for reading in children.

Reading is a joyful exercise, but the benefits of building a reading culture do not stop there. Children who are passionate readers today, are tomorrow’s leading problem solvers.

Here are some actions to spark a love of reading in children this Mandela Month:
* Volunteer to read or tell stories to children at your local library.
*Start your own reading club. Whether its five or 50 children, get together each week to read and share stories.
*Donate reading-related resources to a school, classroom, community centre or reading club that needs them.
*Encourage children of all ages to review a story that they recently read or a story that you have shared with them.
*Support a literacy organisation by donating time or funds. For a list of great literacy organisations and the work that they do, visit nalibali.org/partners.

Remember, these actions do not have to stop at the end of Mandela Month – you can instill a passion for reading in children every day of the year.

You can share your initiative with Nal’ibali. To do this, send an email to Gogo at support@nalibali.org with the subject line “Hello, Gogo!”. Tell her what you did for the children in your community for Mandela Month. Include your name, surname, contact details and physical address.

To celebrate Mandela Month, Gogo is also giving away 67 books to seven lucky caregivers and their little ones.

To enter, write in the subject field: “Nal’ibali Express Competition”. Also, include your name and surname, the name and age of your child, as well as whether you prefer English or Sotho books. Winners will be asked for addresses on notification.
