Centenarian Hana Mfeku reached another milestone by turning 102 on 23 March.
She was born in Fort Beaufort, Eastern Cape, in 1920. The town was part of the former Republic of Transkei.
Mfeku, the firstborn of ten children, is the only surviving child of her late parents, Emma Swartbooi and Morris Davids.
When her father remarried later on, she gained eight stepsiblings, of whom five are still alive and residing in Bloemfontein.
Mfeku likens reaching this milestone age to breaking a sports record that has stood for decades.
Her recipe for longevity is living according to the will of God and following a healthy lifestyle.
Even at her age, she is capable of walking herself around the yard without using a walking stick. Dietwise she prefers home-cooked meals and insists on having a good mix of organic foods.
She also refrains from consuming alcohol.
Mfeku is respected by her family for upholding the principles of a life well-lived.
She encourages her offspring to know God, value human life, respect others and live in honesty, integrity and love.
Mfeku’s husband, Mzimasi John Mfeku, died in the 1980s. The couple had ten children, of whom four daughters – Nonceba, Dorah, Pheli and Eunice – are still alive.
Mfeku is the proud grandmother of 69 grandchildren.
