Two male suspects have been caught regarding fuel theft from a Transnet fuel pipeline, while the third suspect died at the crime scene in Vrede.
The two culprits, Levy Alex Sambo (36, South African) and Elijah Kafodya (28, Malawian), face charges of theft and damage to infrastructure.
They briefly appeared in the Memel Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (15/06) following their arrest on Monday (13/06).
Capt. Christopher Singo, spokesperson for the Hawks, said the suspects fled in a white bakkie upon seeing security officials patrolling the area of the fuel line. Singo said the officers found the corpse of unknown man at the scene. “Suspicion is that the deceased man was an accomplice.”
A forensic investigation is underway to determine the cause of his death and his identity.
