The University of the Free State (UFS) continues its culture of rolling out the red carpet and honouring exceptional individuals, still living, for their contribution in various fields. The institute has bestowed honorary doctorates on two of four astute individuals for their positive impact.

The first recipients are Dr Maye Musk and Prof. Adipala Ekwamu, honoured at a ceremony held in Bloemfontein on Wednesday (12/04), and at the Qwaqwa campus today – Friday. The remaining pair, Dave Pepler and Prof Peter Vale, will follow suit on 21 and 22 April, respectively.

Musk, an international best-selling author, dietitian, model, and public speaker, received an honorary doctorate in Dietetics. Her leadership traits have pivoted her to become the first representative of the Consulting Dietitians of South Africa, president of the Consulting Dietitians of Canada, and chair of the Nutrition Entrepreneurs (NE), and Academy of Dietetics and Nutrition. Musk’s nutrition business has footprints in eight cities and three countries, for more than 45 years. The company offers professional services in counselling, speaking, consulting, writing, and media work.

In her acceptance speech, Musk thanked the university.

“This was so unexpected. Thank you very much for this honour. My children are very proud of me. This is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It has been a wonderful experience in Bloemfontein and at Kovsies. Everybody was great.”

Prof Francis Petersen, rector and vice-chancellor of the UFS, said Musk was a worthy recipient.

“Dr Musk, today we participate in what you have achieved in the field of nutrition, healthy living, and wellness. May this gesture of recognition inspire you to keep on being successful and making an impact wherever you go. And may you always remember that you are part of our UFS community – and our family – here in the Free State,” said Petersen.

Musk’s book, titled A woman makes a plan, is available in 100 countries and has been published in 30 languages.

Musk was the guest of honour at a luncheon that celebrated the 40th anniversary of the university’s Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, which was established in 1983.
