The emergency medical services team of the Free State Department of Health has returned home after being deployed in KwaZulu-Natal to help with flood relief efforts.
The eight members returned on Friday (22/04) after a week in KwaZulu-Natal, one of two provinces affected by recent floods.
They were deployed following Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Monday (18/04) that the country was returning to a national state of disaster due to extensive flood damage in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
Emergency services from various government spheres in South Africa were dispatched to help rescue lives and aid victims of the natural disaster.
The catastrophic floods claimed hundreds of lives in the two provinces.
In KwaZulu-Natal floods displaced multiple residents, reportedly destroying more than 1 000 houses and damaging more than 8 000.
The Free State team comprised of rescue technician practitioners, advanced life support paramedics and specialised personnel who are also lecturers at the Free State College of Emergency Care.
