A former admin clerk of the Free State police headquarters in Bloemfontein who was sentenced for fraud and money laundering has also been ordered to repay the state R2,4 million. This follows his conviction and sentencing by the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

Mpho Godfrey Selesho (38) was ordered to immediately pay an amount of R500 000 on the day of sentencing, 21 July, and repay the balance in monthly instalments of R53 000, effective on 1 August.

The order is part of Selesho’s sentence of eight years’ direct imprisonment, which was imposed after he had been found guilty of fraud and money laundering.

The court found that he unduly enriched himself by defrauding the Free State police while he was employed during the period of 2014 to 2016. He was working in the police finance section at the provincial headquarters in Bloemfontein the period in question.

Capt. Christopher Singo, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said sentencing had was culmination ofresulted from an investigation launched after discoveringy of fraudulent activities.

“Selesho was involved in fraudulent activities where he stole state funds exceeding R2 million for his own benefit,” said Singo.

“The court sentenced Selesho to eight years’ direct imprisonment on a count of fraud, of which six years were suspended for a period of five years on condition he is not found guilty of similar offence during the period of suspension.”He said t

The accused further received an eight-year suspended sentence for money laundering.
