The pair’s arrest in early June followed an investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation based in Bloemfontein. They reappeared in court on Thursday (11/08).

Christopher Singo, the provincial Hawks spokesperson, said their investigation revealed the pair allegedly defrauded the department’s third-party funds received from clients of the department.

The two suspects were entrusted to receive and deposit the money for the department. “They then allegedly used some of the money for their own benefit instead of depositing it. As a result of these fraudulent activities, the department was prejudiced and suffered losses of more than R1 million,” said Singo.

According to findings, the alleged crime was committed during their employment, between the period of 2018 and 2020.

Mkhize and Ntshengila are currently out on bail of R4 000 each. The two women have appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court.
