The Bloemfontein police’s team of forensic experts are investigating a concealment of birth case, while also searching for the woman who gave birth. This is after the discovery of a stillborn foetus, discarded in Bloemfontein’s central business district (CBD), early Monday (17/04) morning.

The body was found on the corner of President Brand and Elizabeth Street, stuffed into a refuse bag, in the middle of the traffic lane heading north in President Brand Street.

Lt. Col Thabo Covane, spokesperson for the police in the Mangaung Metro, said members of the public who made the gruesome find alerted the police. He said two eyewitnesses who spotted the body led the police to the scene. The police’s forensics team attended to the scene and collected evidence as part of their investigation in shedding light on the birth concealment.

Covane said the team immediately commenced with their investigation in the surrounding residential places.

He said the police have not yet made any arrests regarding the concealment, and are appealing to members of the public with reliable information to contact the investigative officer.

Bystanders watched in dismay while officials conducted their preliminary investigation. Details surrounding the disposal of the body are still vague.

Members of the public who can help with the investigation of the case, are requested to contact Capt. Yaliwe Mokoena on 082-526-2653 or 082-466-7490. They may also submit information on the My SAPS app or call the Crime Stop number, 08600-10111.
