An ongoing investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit into a fraudulent driving licence scam has led to the arrest of another alleged syndicate.
The latest alleged perpetrator, Ishmael Selogiloe Kganare (42), appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on 5 May on charges of fraud and corruption.
Four other suspects, Keneilwe Elisa Molehe (53), Kebautlwile Jacqueline Kgwadi (47), Matsobane Michael Mokhonwana (48) and Lehlohonolo Athy Molosi (46), were arrested in March.
According to Capt. Christopher Singo, Hawks spokesperson, all five suspects are implicated in the solicitation of bribes from victims who intended to register for a driving licence at a testing station.
He said two victims claimed the suspects had defrauded them of R8 500.
According to Singo, the suspects allegedly convinced the victims that Mokhonwana would assist them in obtaining a driving licence for R8 500. He said the victims paid the amount agreed upon.
None of the suspects are in service of the traffic department.
“When luring the victims, they claimed to know certain traffic officials who can assist with driving licences,” he said.
“Follow-ups were made by the victims, but no feedback was provided by the suspects.”
