The reunion of the Mampoi Secondary School in Phuthaditjhaba, Qwaqwa will be held on 1 and 2 October. Former scholars launched this initiative in 2016.

The chief objective is two-fold: reunite former teachers and learners to aid the school to continue producing learners of high calibre, and to uphold the value of education as an instrument for positive social change. This will be the first reunion post-Covid-19 with the last held in 2019.

Former learners and teachers are called upon to make the event a success through donations for education support programmes and participation.

Moeti Molelekoa, spokesperson for the organising committee, said the clarion call resonated with the school’s motto, Sehwai Ipokelle, which loosely translates to make hay while the sun shines.

“As former generation we strive to inspire the present learners’ generation to value education and the school as a fundamental institution of education. This reunion is necessary and critical to galvanise support and unity at the height of a crisis of destruction of township schools by criminal syndicates,” said Molelekoa.

He said the school’s calibre was reflected in candidates who had gone on to become professionals that held key positions in both the public and the private sector.

The school was named in honour of Mampoi Mopeli, the wife of Dr Tshiame Kennet Mopeli, former governor of Qwaqwa. Both have passed, with the governor passing in October 2014.

Proceedings of the reunion will start with a candle lighting service, remembering fellow students who have passed on.
