Farmers cautioned

Free State Agriculture (FSA) is calling on farmers across the province to make timely preparations for veldfire season.

According to Kempen Nel, chairman of the FSA’s natural resources committee, the good grass cover in the province has potential to fuel veldfires.

“The current weather conditions heighten the risk of widespread fires,” he said.

Nel said in support of the preparation process, the Agri Relief Foundation recently donated 35 blowers to the FSA, which will be distributed to agricultural associations.

“The agricultural sector is deeply grateful for this assistance.”

Nel said the Fire Protection Associations (FPAs) have already submitted their fire plans to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Forestry. In addition, measures to curb the threat of veldfire were discussed at a meeting with the national department on 27 June, in Bloemfontein.
