Wards 18, 20, 22 and 25 in the Mangaung Metro were held by DA councillors Dave McKay (Ward 18), Dulandi Leech (Ward 22), Werner Pretorius (Ward 20), and Rossouw Botes (Ward 25).

They became vacant after McKay, Leech, and Pretorius were appointed to serve in the Free State Legislature, after the party secured seven of 30 seats in the provincial legislature after the national and provincial elections on 29 May.

The by-election for Ward 25 is due to Botes being shifted to a proportional representatives (PR) councillor position in the Mangaung Council.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Free State will conduct a by-election to fill the four wards in the Mangaung Metro on 11 September.

Registration for the upcoming by-election was held over two days, Saturday, 27 July, and Sunday 28 July.

BloemExpress regrets the error in the edition of Wednesday, 24 July, pertaining to the total number of DA seats in the provincial legislature and change to ward councillors.
