The members of the Mangaung Retired Teachers’ Association (Mareta) in Bloemfontein banded together and donated essentials to the Omega Old Age Home in Heidedal. These essentials include hygiene products, along with non-perishable and staple foods.
This gesture of goodwill took place on Thursday, 18 July, in support of Mandela Day. This annual global event, on the birthday of the first president of South Africa in the democratic dispensation, sees people all over the world dedicating 67 minutes to serving their follow man and for the betterment of humanity in honour of Nelson Mandela. The former president died on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95 years, after succumbing to a prolonged respiratory infection.
The example he set for promoting acts of humanity serves as motivation for the general public to each year designate 67 minutes to making a positive difference in the lives of others and promote goodwill.
Mareta, however, continues lending a hand to various non-government community initiatives and learners beyond Mandela Day. Itumeleng Ditaunyane, spokesperson, explains that members volunteer, raise proceeds, and donate to ensure the success of their charity initiative.
Ditaunyane says Omega was identified as the Mandela Day beneficiary this year based on its dire situation. Omega is home to 42 adults, with 11 staff members and caregiver volunteers.
Martha Mcharlies, supervisor at Omega, says the majority of adults depend on state grants.
“Realistically speaking, we struggle keeping up with the needs of adults housed because of high costs. We are grateful for Mareta’s gesture – it makes a positive difference indeed,” says Mcharlies.
